When he has to make a living, and cannot simply play patches, Chip is a career Supply Corps Officer in the United States Navy.  His Navy career has taken him around the world.  He’s been stationed in various U.S. states as well as Haiti, Japan, Iraq, Italy and Bahrain.  His sea tours have included USS George Washington (CVN 73), USS John S. McCain (DDG 56) and USNS Bridge (T-AOE-10).  He is originally from Kansas, where he graduated from the University of Kansas with degrees in Political Science and English - this is why there’s so much flowery B.S. in the book.

Chip met his lovely wife Kate in Tiananmen Square in Beijing, China over Thanksgiving 2001.  Kate is also a Naval Officer and was stationed at the Naval Hospital in Yokosuka, Japan when they met.  He and Kate welcomed their daughter (and future Philmont Ranger)

Meghan into the world in 2006.  She has been keeping them both VERY busy since then and thus Chip’s time for working on this book and attending to collecting issues has been limited.

Chip spent his Scouting youth in Kansas where he became involved as a Cub Scout.  He capped his Cub Scouting time by earning the Arrow of Light. He earned his Eagle in 1985 and earned his fourth Bronze Eagle Palm (10 total) in 1989.  He has held most every Scout youth position from Scribe to Senior Patrol Leader and was active in his home Order of the Arrow (OA) Lodge, Nani-Ba-Zhu #321.  He served in many capacities in the Lodge, including Lodge Chief and was also Section Vice Chief for Section NC-3.  He is a Vigil Honor member of the OA and a recipient of the Founder’s Award.  Since he joined the Navy, he has been involved with Scouting in a number of Councils in the U.S. and overseas.  Chip first attended Philmont in 1985.  He also attended National Junior Leader Instructor Camp (NJLIC) at Philmont and served on NJLIC staff in 1990.  He served on staff as a Ranger in 1991 and 1993.

He has collected a multitude of different things (bugs, stamps, pencils, etc.) since childhood and began collecting scout patches when he purchased a small bag of generic camp patches at his local Scout camp, Camp Kanza.  His main Scout collecting interest is Philmont and he collects anything and everything related to the ranch and the Philmont experience.  In addition to Philmont, he collects everything from his home Council and Lodge.  He also dabbles at collecting other Boy Scout memorabilia he thinks are “neat.”

Chip is a life member of the International Scout Collectors Association and the Philmont Staff Association.
